We are pleased to announce that the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, has published the Handbook for Ensuring Universal Accessibility of Public Buildings (PriD).

The content of the handbook is based on current legislation concerning the universal accessibility of the built environment, as well as the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia’s many years of research and professional experience. It is primarily intended for owners, administrators, operators, managers, planners and contractors to familiarize themselves with the mandatory and recommended requirements, as well as the deadlines for ensuring universally accessible public facilities.

The handbook places special emphasis on elements of the built environment that are key to ensuring the accessibility of buildings and services, particularly for people with mobility impairments, blind and visually impaired persons, deaf and hard-of-hearing persons, and others. The chapters (access routes, entrances, stairs, elevators, restrooms, signage, lighting, etc.) therefore include legal requirements, supplemented by photographs, sketches, common challenges and practical advice for the design, renovation and maintenance of public facilities.

The handbook is available in Slovenian and can be accessed via this link, where you can either view it in its entirety or focus on specific chapters covering different elements of the built environment.

A limited number of free printed copies are also available—you can request yours via this link.

We hope that this guide will contribute to tangible improvements in the built environment, enabling people with disabilities to participate fully in society.
