An accessible parking space is intended for holders of a disabled parking permit. As users may have different types of impairments, it is important that they can park near the entrance and have sufficient space to allow safe entry into and exit from the vehicle.
An accessible parking space must be located near the building entrance, at the level of the प्रवेश floor. If such a space cannot be provided nearby, a short-term stopping area must be arranged in front of the entrance.
In parking areas with multiple spaces, the minimum number of accessible parking spaces is determined according to the total number of parking spaces:
• for 1 to 10 spaces, at least one accessible space must be provided;
• for 11 to 50, four;
• for 51 to 100, eight;
• for 101 to 150, twelve;
• for 151 to 199, fourteen;
• for 200 or more, sixteen accessible spaces, with an additional four spaces for each subsequent 100 parking spaces.
Parking spaces must also be appropriately marked with the international symbol of accessibility—both with vertical signage and ground markings.
The length of a parking space must be at least 540 cm and the width at least 390 cm. Within these dimensions, a clearly marked access aisle with a width of 150 cm must also be provided. This access aisle may be shared by two adjacent parking spaces.
Covered parking spaces (for example, in parking garages) may be slightly smaller: 500 cm in length and 350 cm in width.
If the parking space is located next to a sidewalk, access from the access aisle to the sidewalk must be ensured via a lowered curb.
If the parking space is not free of charge, particular attention must also be given to the accessibility of the parking meter. It must be located in a place accessible to wheelchair users, and the route to it must be free of level changes or uneven surfaces. Control elements must also be designed to be accessible.
