Interior floor markings

What is the best way to arrange floor markings inside a building for the blind and visually impaired?

In order to make it easy for blind and partially sighted people to access and use a public facility, it is essential to ensure that the route from the entrance to the reception desk is as short and easy as possible. In this way, the person at the reception desk can receive all the assistance and further guidance he or she needs.

If the counter is not located directly at the entrance, it is important to provide contrasting and tactile signage to guide the blind or partially sighted person from the entrance to the reception desk or the appropriate office.

With the growth in the adaptation of buildings to comply with the ICI, offers of specific, but often expensive and unsightly, tactile floor markings for interior spaces are appearing. However, the same effect can be achieved in a more general and generic way - by using carpet or floor matting. This should be in a colour contrasting with the floor and positioned to guide the visitor from the entrance to the reception point.

This solution allows adaptation in a way that is simple, aesthetic and, above all, affordable.

The Rules on Universal Construction and Use of Buildings define, as mandatory professional references, the standards SIST ISO 21542, SIST 1186 and SIST EN 60118-4. Although these standards are normally paid in the SIST online store, since 2025 the state finances access to all standards that are introduced exclusively through legislation, so they are available free of charge to Slovenian economic operators.
